In one of the biggest blunders in its history, game engine Unity shocked its users late in 2023 by charging an exorbitant fee for both access to and use of the engine. The move outraged both the gaming industry and fan base, with well-known indie heavyweights calling for a full-blown boycott of the software. Unity ultimately retracted the controversial decision, but the damage was done and left a sour taste in the mouths of game designers looking for an affordable choice for their next passion project. Now, all eyes will be on Unity in 2024 to make sure they've truly learned their lesson.

Gaming enthusiasts received a welcomed update recently, when popular game creation software GameMaker proudly announced that their engine would be free for all. The move was in response to the latest blunder from Unity, which had attempted to charge an exorbitant fee for use of their software. In a scathing blog commentary, GameMaker called out Unity for their misstep and declared their free software a show of solidarity with the community. With GameMaker stepping up to provide an affordable and creator-friendly game engine, all eyes are on Unity in 2024 to see if they've taken the hint. In their blog, they laid a scathing remark about Unity's blunder stating "We have seen other platforms making awkward moves with their pricing and terms, so we thought, what if we did the opposite, something that could actually be good for developers? Our success is measured by the number of people making games!"

He also mentioned it as a holiday treat for the Thanksgiving/Christmas season but it's clear that thats something pr and law department told him to add to not make it a call to action against the unity engine. What a fun and exciting development in the gaming industry! With their decision to make their engine free for everyone to enjoy, GameMaker is making gaming more inclusive and accessible to developers all over the world. Kudos to this development team for stepping up to help make our hobby more fun and diverse.
