top 10 anime i wathced in 2023

"2023 was an impressive year for anime, with a number of outstanding series both new and ongoing. With so much great content to enjoy, it can be hard to keep up. So, for all you anime fans out there, here's my top 10 anime watched in 2023. Let's dive in! Not every anime on the list came out in 2023, but it's just ones I ended up watching in 2023.

1. Sonic Prime

Genre: action, adventure
Copyright: Sega, Netflix

If you're a fan of blue-blurred Hedgehog, look no further than Netflix's Sonic Prime series! This show is a mind-bending, well-written and well-acted look into the multiverse of Sonic's world, where a powerful gemstone in the hands of evil Dr. Eggman cracks reality and transforms the lush green fields into a dystopian wasteland. The series follows Sonic's quest to assemble the gem pieces, but not without some unexpected surprises and an edgier version of Tails by his side. Unfortunately eggman with a gang of eggmen, have most of the gems thanks to a confrontation with shadow lost the gem parts. In the meantime, season 3 of the show awaits us, and we can't wait to see how it all ends!

Sonic Prime is the perfect show to watch as a Sonic fan! It's well-written, entertaining, and feels like a treat for viewers. Sonic's character is still arrogant but loving and loyal to his friends, fighting against Dr. Eggman and his tyranny. The Eggman gang is hilarious and well-written, giving viewers a glimpse into how the writers approach the series. There are some truly crazy worlds, my personal favorite being the pirate one, where Knuckles is a pirate captain! It's an absolutely fun and wacky trip, packed with humor and action, making it a must-watch for any Sonic fan.

2. undead unluck

 genre: adventure, action, supernatural
copyright: Suiesha, Shonen jump

Undead Unluck is quite possibly one of the most amazingly fun and chaotic shows around, and I'm not ashamed to admit that I've fallen head-over-heels in love with its epic, edge-of-your-seat action. With an edgy, yet engaging premise, we're thrown into a world where select individuals possess supernatural abilities linked to the word "un" - like "Undead" and "Unluck." Through a twist of fate, the male lead Andy is drawn to the show's sassy female lead Fuuko, who is cursed with the power of "Unluck" that brings misfortune to those she touches. As the series embraces its steamy side, Andy aims to use Fuuko's unluck power to bring an end to his invincible body - through their mutual act of love-making. With its heart-pounding action, captivating characters, and daring exploration of taboo subject matter, Undead Unluck is a wild, wickedly enjoyable ride that is bound to keep you on the edge of your seat.

In this action-packed anime series, our lead characters, Andy and Fuuko, set out on a hunt for two members of the mysterious "Twelve Order," with the intention to join the powerful collective. As the show opens up their world, we're treated to a deep and compelling story that explores themes of love, loss, and redemption. And despite its intense action and violence reminiscent of shows like Hellsing, the series also packs an emotional punch, delivering thought-provoking moments and powerful characters. If you're looking for an anime that pulls the heartstrings as hard as it kicks ass, Undead Unluck is the show for you. With its mix of steamy romance and brutal action, Undead Unluck is an epic and unpredictable ride that will leave you on the edge of your seat, both breathless and emotional. Don't miss out on this wild and wicked journey, and prepare to be surprised by the show's daring exploration of human emotion and nature. Whether you're looking for a show that sparks your passion for romance or action, Undead Unluck has a little something for everyone, and it's the animated must-watch of the season.

Undead Unluck is an action-packed anime series that never fails to keep viewers captivated and entertained. One of the highlights of the series is the two-part story involving Andy and Mico, which delves into the show's emotional side, revealing the true depth and thoughtfulness of its characters. During this arc, fuuko meets a painter who shares her thoughts on art and loneliness, showing a softer side to the show's usually steamy themes. With its high stakes and dramatic tension, Undead Unluck is an entertaining and engaging watch that is sure to keep viewers glued to the screen. As the show progresses, the emotional points begin to surface when Andy and a girl named Mico are battling. During their fight, Mico reveals that she had loved Andy but was unable to find him, which deeply affected her. The fight becomes even more intense when we discover that Mico had stayed young throughout her life due to the group where she worked, and hated the fact that she was aging. As she and Andy continue to attack each other, Fuuko's powers allow Andy to break through Mico's defenses, and land a final blow. This ultimately leads to a touching and heartfelt moment

3. Pokemon: Best Wishes
Genre: shounen, action, adventure
Copyright: Nintendo,

Not gonna lie, Generation 5 was my re-entry point for Pokémon as a teen - the last game I played before that being Pokémon Emerald back in middle school. Recently, I revisited my love for the series, and the anime, which is why I decided to delve back into my roots, from playing games like Pokémon Pathways. Getting back into Pokémon generation 5's anime was an interesting way to get back into a series that I hadn't been involved in since third generation!

Although Pokémon Best Wishes doesn't rank among the best of the series, it's still a fun watch, with Ash's interactions with characters like Iris and his rival being a focal point. The anime's focus on Ash and Pikachu genuinely enjoying their adventure is refreshing in a time when many anime portray the journey as depressing. Despite its flaws, the Gen 5 anime offers plenty of fun times, and watching Ash and Pikachu savor every moment makes it a memorable experience.

4. my adventures with superman

Genre: shounen, action, Superhero
Copyright: DC Comics, Warner brothers, adult swim

So, this is kind of cheating since the show is more inspired by anime but not japanese anime. but its my list so i can put it on here.

My Adventures With Superman is an amazing watch! In this series, we get to see a refreshing look at the life, struggles, and evolution of the man of steel. In my prior review, I mentioned how fascinating and entertaining episode 1 was as we delved into Superman's origin. As the show continues, it gives us a deeper look into the inner workings of the DC universe, including the villains' side of the story. We also get to see how Intergang transformed from a supernatural organization into a technically-advanced threat, and the origin of Parasite as a symbiotic mecha rather than a virus. An exciting and engaging series full of action and intrigue! My Adventures With Superman is an must-watch for any DC fan, or anyone looking for a engaging and entertaining series full of heart and humanity.

My Adventures With Superman has so many incredible moments, and my personal favorite is the Thanksgiving episode. We finally get to see Lois and Clark as an official couple, spending the holiday with the Kent family. However, Lois's dad arrives and creates some family drama, as the Kents don't like him for his strict military-driven nature. During the evening, Lois, Clark, and Jimmy hold a meeting to address Lois's father and a metallic sphere gifted to Lois by the Multiversal League of Lois Lanes drops from Lois's purse, showing what happens if Superman is left unchecked. A small slither of kryptonite causes Clark to fall down, causing the ship to go into an emergency mode, sending out drone robots and alike to stop any threat. Clark even in his weakened state saves his friends and family on the farm, ma and pa are worried but Clark gives a reassuring smile as he flies into action to save the world. The episode deals a lot with family and generational trauma, not even with Lois' family but Clarks side to as he deals with his Kryptonian dad's ghost, it tells a story about what it means to be Superman, what it means to be the hero we need.

5. Pokemon: twilight wings

 Genre: shounen, action, adventure
Copyright: Nintendo,

Pokémon Twilight Wings was a stunning animated short series set in the Galar region of Pokémon Sword and Shield, giving us an insight into the gym leaders and their world. I stumbled upon it by chance while browsing for Nessa's appearance in the anime (before the announcement that the anime had ended). It's a free watch on YouTube and features some amazing animation and storytelling. My favorite episode was the one centered on Nessa, with its beautiful portrayal of Nessa's anxiety and compassion, and her relationship with her Feebas. A treat for all Pokémon fans, especially those who love Nessa! The entire series goes into the great detail and mindset of each gym leader and important scenes of the region, and i really hope pokemon as a game does this with their games the way they do it with the animated shorts.

From the brief but impactful animated short, we get a peek into Nessa's life: the pressures of being a gym leader, the stress of her modeling job, and even the emotional weight of her past. With beautiful acting and an engaging story, Nessa's character comes to life, revealing her range and depth. In particular, the flashback showing her compassion as a child, and the payoff in the end, where her Feebas evolves into its beautiful Milotic form, show how far Nessa has come, and it's a beautiful scene of personal growth. Nessa is truly an impressive, multifaceted character! Nessa- the Milotic.

6. sailor moon crystal

Genre: shounen, Magical Girl, action, adventure
Copyright: Viz Media, Toei

Sailor Moon Crystal is an awesome reminder that old school can still rock! This remake of the original series maintains the original scripts but features new, modern animation and voice acting, making it look crisp and beautiful. Usagi's actress does a great job, and the modern designs keep the original looks while adding a modern touch, with my favorite being Sailor Mars'. As a Sailor Mars fan, this updated version of the series is a treat. Let's fight in the name of love and justice, and never lose passion!

Editors note: I am a Sailor Mars simp

7. dragon ball super

Genre: shounen, action, adventure
copyright: Suiesha, Shonen jump,

Amongst my top shows of 2023 was Dragon Ball, and I loved it! With a fun mix of action, drama, and humor, the Tournament of Power had me hooked. The buildup to the tournament was well-conceived, and I really enjoyed seeing Goku bond with Android 17 - a seemingly random pair that became the ultimate friendship. With an abundance of exciting fights, twists, and plotlines, the Tournament of Power was a stellar season full of surprises, and I can't wait to see what comes next from the world of Dragon Ball.

8. My Happy Mirage

Genre: Shoujo, romance, action, drama
Copyright: yen press, square enix, netflix,

My Happy Mirage turned out to be an unexpected anime hit! I initially thought it would be a relaxing slice-of-life shoujo with few surprises. I was wrong! My wife, who isn't big into the shoujo genre, and I were taken on a magical journey of chaos and laughter when we watched it on Netflix. We were hooked from the title card and were thoroughly entertained throughout!

Enter Saimori, a humble servant living in feudal Japan, ruled by a rigid caste system and arranged marriages. Despite her family's mistreatment of her, she's forced into an arranged marriage with a powerful police chief named Kudou, hoping to improve her station in life. However, just as their love begins to flourish, Saimori is kidnapped by supernatural forces and Kudou sets out to find her. With the help of friendship, love, and determination, he must overcome the powers that be and save her - can their love prevail over all?

My Happy Mirage is a fun and exciting series that follows Saiori, a young girl without supernatural abilities, and Kodou, who possesses elemental abilities and impressive swordsmanship. After rescuing her from her abusive family, Kodou agrees to duel her grandfather and cousin to earn back her hand, but before he can win back her freedom, a sudden emergency arises, leading to Kodou to fall into a coma. That's when Saiori's own powers manifest as an acute psychic ability, giving her control over the dream state. It's sweetly charming to see these love birds take on supernatural forces and prove that love wins over evil every time

9. My Hero Academia

Genre: shounen, superhero, action, adventure
Copyright: Viz Media, Funimation, toho

My Hero Academia Season 6 is off to an intense start, building on the events of last season. As we delve deeper into the Liberation War, we discover Hawks' complex role as a middleman between the heroes and the Liberation Front. But when it's revealed that the Liberation Army aims to destroy all of Japan, the stakes grow even higher. Heroes and villains fall in droves during this dark and somber battle as everyone fights for their beliefs. Among all this destruction, we also see Hawks forced to betray his morals and Endevour's past abuse of Shoto and his siblings. It's hard to see our heroes stoop to such lows amidst all this chaos and darkness, the story continues to build to an unexpected, but satisfying conclusion.

As we come to the final few episodes, the stakes are raised even higher and emotions run high as the characters struggle to reach their goals and resolve their personal conflicts. But in the end, the characters manage to find the strength and courage to push forward and make tough decisions to protect the people they care about. As the final few episodes draw to a close, we see how these hard-fought victories have a long-lasting impact on the characters and the world of My Hero Academia. The worse part is when the last domino falls, as All For One posses the body of Shikaragi, making him into his own puppet, not even Deku can stop it as they fight to the bitter end, but All For One leaves to cause more chaos. we loose so many heroes by the end of it. we lose Midnight, and the new fan favorite Miriko. Side note on that, Miriko vs the Scientist is pretty great because the doctor looks like Eggman, and thats great. Also delicious brown waifu

The second half of this season is full of shocking surprises as Dark Deku's path starts to diverge from the rest of the heroes. A dark and gritty tone reminiscent of 90s image comics pervades the story as the world becomes lawless. And the villains aren't playing around: they're tearing through the streets, destroying everything in their wake and taking out heroes left and right. Deku decides to go rogue to try and save everyone, and though his friends try to help, it's no use. As Deku finally returns to the academy, those he saved turn their backs, and even a friendly kangaroo woman has to convince him to stay despite his isolation, Deku continues to stay true to his purpose, thanks to the kind words and support of the mysterious Kangaroo Woman. Even as the other heroes lose faith in him and doubt his methods, Deku perseveres to save everyone, not just those who deserve it. As he navigates the dark and dangerous waters of the hero world, he begins to understand what truly makes a hero - not just power and bravery, but also empathy and compassion. In a season full of heartbreak, drama, and danger, Deku's story is one of resilience and hope. And It is My Hero's best arch.

10. Spy x Family

Genre: Action adventure, mystery, spy thriller, romanc

copyright: Suiesha, Shonen jump, viz media

Spy x Family season 2 has arrived, and it hasn't missed a beat! Building on season 1's charm and aesthetic, it maintains a balance of sweet family moments and thrilling espionage. Now that we're deeper into Operation Strix, the stakes are even higher. And with Damien's development, we get a closer look at his growth as he struggles with his sense of manhood and crushing on Anya. Plus, with this season, we're one step closer to ending the war between East and West Berling! Spy x Family season 2 is worth the wait, delivering on its unique blend of spy hijinks and heartwarming family feels.

Spy x Family season 2 brings even more heart and laughs back! My favorite episode is the multi-part cruise ship adventure where Yor and Loid have to be separated. Loid learns what it means to be a good dad to Anya while Yor, as an assassin, must work as a mafia boss's bodyguard. Through the double feature, we learn the mafia boss is a woman, a mom to a young baby and Yor must learn non-lethal combat damage. This episode is a sweet peek at what it means to be a parent and an action-packed reminder that being a parent isn't always easy. But neither is being a spy or assassin, or an 4 year old girl.
