top 10 comics i read in 2023

When it comes to comics, I try not to be bias, if a story is good then its good regardless if it's from marvel, dc, image or etc. But it's been hard to read modern comics lately. even when it comes to politics I agree with, it's hard to read when the storylines are just poor. But I was able to get a good list of my favorite comics I read in 2023 easily. The picks i chose were the ones that either stuck out to me, or ones that I absolutely loved and are now part of my personality.

10. Superman: Space Age

Continuing our 2023 Superman celebration, we look back at an old-school comic of the Man of Steel that hearkens back to the golden age of comics. "Superman: Space Age" is a retelling of the classic Superman origin story with a twist: Clark Kent is given a vision of the future, including the world-ending catastrophe of "Crisis on Infinite Earths." This sparks Clark into action to save the world across the decades, and it's a nostalgic thrill ride that fans of Superman and the Golden Age of comics will love.

The comic is a joy to read, with its homage to the golden age of comics and its demonstration of Superman's compassion and sense of responsibility towards humanity. It illustrates a wholesome and heroic figure, one who acts out of love for the people rather than simply being a "strong punch man." The comic delivers a timeless message of hope and goodness that will resonate with readers, both young and old, reminding us of the timeless allure of Superman and the enduring power of good in the face of adversity.

9. Star Trek: The Animated Celebration #1-3

I wont sit here and pretend that im a big fan of the star trek the animated series, nor the fact that i was born in the 90s, can i say that i did i grow up with it. but with that being said i found this comic strip series on complete accident, but i ended up falling in love with it quickly. the way it homaged and celebrated star trek. not only its animated series but its comics and its history as a hole. how it absolutely loved its source material. it was just beautiful.

8.  The Maxx

The 90s were a bustling time in comic world, with a lot of emerging writers and artists coming together to create something new. Out of the chaos emerged Image Comics, an unconventional and punk rock company that pushed boundaries and changed the face of the industry. While there were certainly some misses along the way, the company's bizarre and entertaining Maxx comic was one of the standouts, entertaining readers with its dark and brooding tone, along with its unique and distinctive art style.

The Maxx is a unique and entertaining comic that feels as if it's a parody of the 90s. The story follows the surreal adventures of a homeless superhero as he tries to protect his social worker from a god-like serial killer. With its bizzare twists, fantastical elements, and an undercurrent of irony that almost feels as if it was made today to poke fun at the 90s, The Maxx is a fun and captivating read that provides a unique spin on the classic superhero genre.

7. Hellboy

There are times when I find myself drawn to the comic world of Hellboy, a series of unique and intriguing stories full of supernatural forces and a never-ending quest for justice. Perhaps it was the phrase "it's just Berserk but happy" that piqued my interest, but regardless, I soon found myself captivated by the Hellboy universe and its ever-present battle against the forces of darkness. Even on a re-read of Volume 1, I found myself hooked by the engaging story of Hellboy, his mission to protect our world from devastation, and the artistic talents of the series creators.

6. Dark Crisis on infinite earths

For a truly dark exploration of DC's multiverse, Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths is the ultimate thrill ride. It's a tale of overcoming the overwhelming odds and the defeat of evil. Inspired by Grant Morrison's Multiversity, it continues the Dark Universe and Dark Multiverse storylines of Batman Who Laughs and Dark Knights Metal. The series even has the audacity to kill off the iconic DC trio of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, paving the way for the next generation of heroes. It's a must-read full of darkness and dread that remains a satisfying victory for the forces of light.

5. King Spawn

Todd McFarlane's Spawn has won my love for many reasons - from the captivating design and horror elements to the edge-of-your-seat action. But the one villain that lives in my head rent-free is Billy Kincaid. He is a twisted individual with no place in the world, and Spawn should have left him dead for good after slaughtering him to demonstrate his power. Yet somehow, King Spawn defied all logic and brought Kincaid back from the grave, thanks to a prophecy that Spawn must ascend to hell and become the King of the underworld.

Spawn's latest installment is a visual feast, with Todd McFarlene's masterful eye for mood and darkness on full display throughout. The chaotic and violent plot delivers the trademark hype with a touch of humor, making it a must-read even while dealing with the uncomfortable realities of a psychotic pedophile leading a cult for Spawn. With its engaging characters and captivating artwork, this installment is well worth your time, whether it's your first visit to the world of Spawn or a return to its dark and violent origins.

4. The Sandman

Neil Gaiman's "Sandman" is an ethereal masterpiece exploring concepts of heroism and the darker aspects of the human condition. Drawing from the artistic side of comics, it takes inspiration from gothic elements, just as goth did punk. Beyond the typical superhero battles, Sandman is a supernatural entity attempting to regain power after thousands of years of imprisonment. The comics take on a more macabre and horror-inspired tone, drawing from Gothic themes and horror comics more than traditional superhero titles, though Neil's appreciation for the genre is clear, blending his gothic sensibilities into the story.

Throughout the series, Sandman's journey into the human realm is a fascinating and eerie exploration of the darker side of reality. From the human fears that give birth to Nightmare to the macabre and mystical characters he meets, Gaiman creates an unforgettable and engaging story that is sure to captivate all kinds of readers. With its gothic themes and exploration of humanity's more ominous side, "Sandman" is a must-read comic for fans of all genres. Its depth, originality, and unique blend of fantasy, horror, and imagination leave a lasting impression that stays with the reader long after the issue has been closed.

Oh also Death is cute and has little sister vibes and i love her for that.

3. Deadoool Samurai

In the midst of what I may call a bleak personal comic space in 2023, Deadpool Samurai serves up a couple of delightfully quirky manga volumes sure to provide some entertainment. With its laughable premise of Deadpool being sent to Japan as a scapegoat by Iron Man and the formation of Avengers Japan, this series is sure to have its readers giggling with joy and cheering on the appearance of one special friend from "My Hero Academia". With its refreshing blend of laughs, action, and a touch of anime flair, Deadpool Samurai is an ideal choice for some light-hearted comic relief amidst the darkness.

2. Freddy Vs Jason Vs Ash  Williams

Groovy!

In this epic continuation of Freddy vs Jason, two classic horror icons battle it out for possession of the infamous Necronomicon. But in the midst of the violent struggle, only one man is up to the task of getting in the middle of their dance - and it's none other than Ashley Williams. The comic is a fun and goofy, yet still bloody, romp with great scares, proving exactly what a great horror comic should be, no matter who is involved. With all the horror and humor one could ask for, readers will be on their toes as they follow Ashley Williams's journey through this horrific nightmare.

1. X-Force

As I celebrated my birthday, my best friend surprised me with a gift of issue 1 of the 1990's "X-Force" comic book. At first, I was just thrilled to receive a present from her, but later, I got the urge to rekindle my love for the '90s "X-Men" comics, especially their gritty and edgy nature. As I opened the comic, I was instantly transported back to the '90s with its radical misspelling of words and "2deep4u" storytelling style spearheaded by Rob Liefield. It was truly a blast and a great way to relive my nostalgic childhood. Reading "X-Force" Vol 1 made me appreciate the comics I had missed out on or forgotten about during my childhood, even the parts that I may not have liked as much back then. The experience reminded me of the fun and excitement I used to feel when reading comic books as a kid, and the joy of being able to relive that feeling thanks to my friend's present will always hold a special place in my heart.

Editors note: I see the irony of putting spawn next to sandman then ending it with marvel. but I didnt even think about that since I used an rng machine to put the list together after choosing my top 10
