What was revealed at the RGG summit 2024
This morning at 6 AM Eastern Standard Time, the RGG 2024 Summit kicked off with a bang, live-streaming its first major reveal—Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii! This game, starring everyone's favorite wild dog of the Dojima clan, Goro Majima, is setting sail for the high seas in a pirate-themed adventure that’s sure to leave fans excited.
The trailer opens with everyone's favorite sociopath Goro Majima. Majima, face down in the sand on a Hawaiian beach, defeated and dying of thirst. A reluctant child approaches and offers him water. As Majima takes a sip, a tiger prowls nearby. In the present day, Majima, now sitting on a throne, reflects on how that child's kindness saved his life. He also recalls how, back on that beach, he had forgotten who he even was. When Majima asks the child where he is, the boy reveals that they are in Hawaii. Before Majima has a chance to relax and enjoy the tropical sun, a crew of pirates attacks him—because, of course, it's hard to keep the "Mad Dog of the Dojima Clan" down, especially when he's armed.
Majima and the child barely escape the pirate onslaught, fleeing to Nele Island. Later, Majima listens to a bartender explain how the Yakuza have made their way to the island. Just as the conversation ends, the bar is attacked by pirates at night. Majima jumps into action, saving the patrons, and the trailer cuts to him picking up a pirate hat and boarding a stolen ship. Naturally, the adventure doesn’t stop there, as their ship is attacked by more pirates.
As a fan of the Yakuza series, I’m beyond excited to see where this game goes. The franchise has always delivered fantastic side games, from its peaks (*Like a Dragon*) to its more polarizing entries (*Dead Souls*). Majima’s gameplay is always a wild ride, with his fluid, violent fighting style blending martial arts and quick weapon combat. In this trailer, we see him embrace pirate-style, dual-wielding swords in fast, swashbuckling combat that looks beautifully smooth in motion.
After the trailer, the developers held a Q&A session, where they revealed more about the game’s locations and mechanics. We learned that *Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii* will feature two distinct gameplay styles: Majima's classic “Mad Dog” style and a new pirate-themed “Sea Dog” style, which players will likely learn from another pirate in the game.
I’m eagerly counting down to February 28, when I’ll be able to step into the world of Hawaii as Captain Majima, defending the islands from the tyranny of pirates!
